Top Tips for visiting Paris in the summer

Paris is a magical place in the summer. From the hot spots like the Tuileries and Jardin du Luxembourg, to the man-made plages at the Seine this seasonal sunniness contrasts and compliments the old façade of the city. Strolling around hand in hand, or with your family in tow, there’s so much more to be explored when the sun is out – as long as you come prepared and know what’s in store, you’ll be hard pushed to have a miserable time. So follow our quick top tips as you’re packing and planning to make sure your trip to Paris is en soleil and not un échec. You might have to look that one up.

  1. Sight-see sensibly
Paris is a typical European city with varying seasons throughout the year – and weather that’s more unpredictable than not. However, in the summer, the sun is hot. Very hot. Although you might be planning a trip full of sightseeing, there’s no escaping the sun so make sure you drink plenty of water, wear sun-cream and take comfy shoes. There’s nothing worse than calling a day short because of blisters. Trust us.
  1. Stroll along the Seine
The Seine is a great place for a bit of refuge from the closeness of central Paris. Without the smog and narrow streets, get a breath of fresh (city) air and walk over the age old bridges. Why not head to Pont Neuf, Paris’ oldest bridge or Pont des Arts where you will find the love locks. If you head up to Île de la Cité , you’ll find the iconic Notre Dame for a picture perfect backdrop. Why not hop on a Seine River Cruise and take in all the sites from one place? Pass the Louvre, the Orsay and up to the Eiffel Tower for a tour to remember.
  1. Hire a bike - or Segway!
In Paris, you don’t want to be hopping in a taxi, and taking the metro can be a bit stressful in the hotter weather. You may see some Vélib bike parks dotted across the city, so if you fancy a go on your own and navigating the streets then by all means, just pay a one off deposit which you get refunded at the end – all automated through a pin system. Alternatively, if you would prefer a tour to learn a little more about Paris, the Fat Tire Bicycle Company allows you to join a bike or Segway tour around the city. It’s pretty cool to be able to say you’ve driven a Segway up to the Arc de Triomphe!
  1. Enjoy the longer evenings
The longer evenings in Paris means that you can explore the city and discover all of its secrets for longer. There’s no hope of covering everything in one day anyway, but at least the attractions have longer opening hours in the summer months too meaning you can try and squeeze in just one more museum before that glass of wine calls...
  1. Admire the sun sets
The sun sets in Paris are something to remember. As the sun goes down over the iconic skyline it’s hard not to fall in love with the city all over again – but from on high. Head up the Arc de Triomphe (open until 11pm) for sweeping views over the city and down the Champs Elysées and La Défense, or go up the city’s only skyscraper, the Montparnasse Tower (open until 11.30pm) to the 56th floor where the observation deck promises you unrivalled panorama of Paris and on a clear day, views of us to 40kms away. Use The Paris Pass for even more great ideas, deals and discounts - not to mention free and fast track entry to the most popular museums, monuments and art galleries in Paris...
